Drive around the Boston metro sometime and try listening
to WBNW 1120. It's amazing what siting an AM TX in a
gravel pit can do to the signal. My guess is that the
Mechanicville signal must come out of an area of
similarly poor soil conductivity.
Generally speaking, the soil conductivity in the Hudson
Valley is quite good and it's not that bad on the New
York side of Lake Champlain. As you go west from the
Capital District along the Mohawk, it gets even better.
Between Rochester and Buffalo, it's great, though it's
nowhere near as good as in, say, South Dakota. But in
the Catskills and the Adirondacks, it's quite poor.
