Re: livin' la vida vinyl
WMWM (Salem State) still has 2 turntables in the air
studio and two in the production studio (along with
CD and cassette decks, plus a Macintosh for
production, etc.) While we have many CDs we also still
have a lot of vinyl records.
Just today I was filling in for our jazz show and I
played a couple Oliver Nelson (no relation) records;
"Stolen Moments", on one turntable, played fine
while his version of "What A Wonderful World" with
Louis Armstrong, on the other one, only played on
one speaker. Such is the world of low-budget college
radio...
I think some local rock bands still put out 7-inch
records or "45s" (though CDs or demo cassettes are
probably more common); rap and R&B still uses vinyl,
and some bands, like REM, will make some of their
new albums available on the vinyl format, for those
who prefer it...
Blues/soul singer Barrence Whitfield, who lives a
couple of blocks from me in Beverly, put out an
amusing tune called "Dust on My Needle": "I got dust/
Dust on my needle/ How can this happen to me/ Dust/
Dust on my needle/ My lady only wants CDs/ Can't get
no play, hi-tech took her away..." The song even
spoofs one drawback of records--sometimes they can
skip--- can skip--- can skip--- can skip...
