I see both sides. Didn't the last RADAR report network listening is down
slightly? However, IMHO, one of the reasons radio is so "sterile" is
GM's/PD's are too afraid to play what sounds "right" for their
station, daypart and market, and would rather consult Mediabase or R&R's
back pages for what to play to be "safe", rather than {to be allowed to}
excercise some good judgement, and go with your gut and ears, and actually
turn a radio station into a living, breathing part of the community while
always striving to play and do different things, knowing some won't work
and some will. Isn't that how humans grow up? Especially in smaller
markets, people will forgive you your foibles if you are "one of them",
not little radio Walmarts that are the same across the world. OTOH, the
ridiculous prices that are paid for stations (didn't Disney buy a Class
IV AM in LA for 33 mill?) make owners afraid of not making their
"nut",so they sanitize the product to he point of overkill.God forbid
you create any buzz-or any sort of publicity, good or bad,not sanctioned
by the great God Capstar! Got some advice for you Messrs
Hicks,Tate,Karmazin,etc....find good the best people, pay them well,
point the way, and LEAVE THEM ALONE. Why are corporate PD's necessary if
you have motivated,LOCAL PD's who know the market, and how to be a part
of it? Think of how much $$$$$ you'd save! (rant mode off)
