If you are skeptical about what follows here, remember what Dr. Science's
announcer is so fond of telling his listeners: "He knows more than you do."

Subject: [DrScience] W And K

From: doc@drscience.com

Dear Doctor Science,
Why do radio stations east of the Mississippi start with the letter W
and those west of the Mississippi start with a K?

- -- Sam Fogleman from Glen Rock, Nj

The first letter of any radio station's call sign indicates the parent
company of that station. As you may have already noticed, the whole country
is divided between WalMart and K Mart. K Mart has precedence in the East,
and WalMart in the South and West. Sure, Target is miffed about this, and
would like to get into the broadcast name game, but Congress said enough was
enough when they settled on K and W. The business of America has always
been business, and now with public radio's new "enhanced" underwriting
announcements, there's not a whole lot of difference between profit and
non-profit anyway.
