I've been taping Bob Bittner's "Let's Talk About
Radio" on WJIB for friends in New York and Ohio
who normally would not be able to hear it. It's a
great show for radio buffs, and it's too bad that
only two stations run it. Maybe other stations in
the Northeast could pick it up, as part of their
public affairs programming. I think it's entertaining
and informative.
That's one thing about radio-- the one subject that
hardly ever comes up is... radio itself. Naturally,
most stations have this phobia about the mere mention
of another station's call letters or shows. Talk show
hosts like Howie Carr have been known to talk about
stuff like TV, movies, music, advertising...but radio?
Not really. Even though many people make radio a
part of their daily lives!
So a show like LTAR is refreshing, and needed. I
remember becoming a fan of WSBK-TV 38's "Ask the
Manager" from its inception in the early 70s
(remember original host Bill Flynn?) because it was
a fun show talking about "TV 38, or the broadcasting
industry in general". I get that same feeling about
LTAR. Maybe it comes from being a radio buff (plus
being in non-commercial radio since 1981)... most
people might not care about format or call letter
changes, or trends in radio, or whatever. But folks
like us do.
I wonder if anyone has heard of any other radio shows
that talk about radio itself...the only one that
remotely comes to mind is "World of Radio" with
Glenn Hauser (I guess it's still around?), which
has popped up on a select few broadcast stations
as well as shortwave outlets. Of course, his show
is geared toward shortwave news rather than the
broadcast band...
