I record 8 hours of music programming without mentioning time, weather, etc,
just talk about the music occasionally. Each hour, when recording (recording
what's on air) I put the VCR on pause, and do my bits with weather, station
promos, etc, then after the ID, VCR starts up again, and I create another
almost hour of music from CD's &records. After 8 hours of this , I have an
8-hour tape that can be played again and again,,,, on WJIB and/or WJTO.
The sound quality is "FM-able" and I make enough of these so that no one can
tell what song is coming next. Presently WJIB has over 1,000 hours of such
tapes. Takes a year or two to make 'em all, but they still work. Only
problem is, I have to replace 3 VCR's every 2 years. VCR's can be started by
remote control from any phone (home is common). So, at 11 PM before I hit the
sack, I change tapes by phone (stopping one VCR and starting another). I can
also play 4 different carts by phone before I leave the station. So,
theoretically, with 8 hour tapes and 3 VCRs, I can sit at home and keep the
station up & running. Of course, that's not why I bought JIB & JTO, but it
sure helps. Apparently Simon Geller did this before he sold WVCA-FM, but
only for the last couple of years. Peter George told me about it in 1992, and
it's been VCR-heaven for me since. - I can also have VCR's stop on a
timer (made by ESE Corp) and another one start on such timer. But I like to
keep tabs on the station at night, and choose to manually do it, partly
because don't watn to cut off a song in the middle, which a timer would have
no sensitivity to. Also ID's are on another timer that play (on cart) at top
of each hour just slightly at higher volume than the music. This works if
most of your songs are instrumentals.
