I called WBOQ today, and got to speak for about ten minutes with program
manager Carl Allen about the reasons the "new" MusicAmerica was cancelled
on that station. Here is a summary of what he told me were the reasons
MusicAmerica was cancelled on WBOQ:
1. There were no local sponsors.
2. Poor production quality. He said there was never a week that the tape
came that there wasn't some sort of problem. He said that things went from
bad to worse when the production of this program changed from Chart
Productions to WPLM doing it themselves. He also said that when it was
switched to WPLM, Ron was not there for the five hour length of the show,
but rather he now just comes in and dictates the intros, etc., and the
music is edited in later.
3. Music selection. He feels that the musical content of the show has
become too jazzy to fit in any longer with the format of the station.
Mr. Allen did tell me that he does admire Ron Della Chiesa for his musical
versatility, but feels that the program is no longer appropriate for the
station.
Now, for some good news, Mr. Allen did tell me of some new programs that
are being developed for Saturday evenings on WBOQ. From 7 to 10, they are
planning a program of swing music, and from 10 to 11, a program of American
Songbook music. But, none of it too jazzy. If this sounds a bit
contradictory to you, it does to me too. I guess we'll just have to wait
and listen.
