As for WNEW, then later, WQEW, it was the music AND its mystique that went
along with it to make it fly long after they left the charts. Successful
stations packaged the music and presentation so as to be less "nostalgia"
and more of just listenable stuff. Music withstands the tough test of time
NOT because of a lot of aging people waxing nostalgic over the stax-o-wax,
IMHO, but moreso when the music finds a way to comfortably fit into
someone's lifestyle. Those who who may have danced to the "American Popular
Standards" when they were initially released undoubtedly prefer NOT to be
reminded of how old/aging they may be!

I was visiting family in the Buckeye state over the past week. I tuned into
WQEW, clear as a bell. Hundreds of acres of countryside around and it still
"worked". I evesdropped on some of their fantastic studio sessions hosted
by Schwartz and others over the years. One featured Tony Bennett picking up
with a roomfull of greats, all jamming live on the air. They described it
as a cool New York evening. Even in its taped-replay as the walls came
down, it was.
