Well, I still have the Philco radio-phonograph that my father bought in
1947, with a 78-rpm changer. The phonograph part doesn't work any more,
unfortunately, but when it did, we played plenty of 78 rpm records on it,
and they never cracked or chipped from the changer. The chipping and
cracking generally comes from accidents while taking them out or putting
them away, not while they're on the changer.

I've also played 78s on newer changers, without much problem. In fact,
since the older 78-rpm records were rigid and less prone to warping than
the later vinyl records, their was almost no problem with slippage. I've
had a lot more trouble playing LPs on changers than I ever did with the old
78s. However, I will say that newer changers are more designed for use
with LPs or 45s and often don't work as well with 78s as earlier ones.
