Not exactly. WMEX was indeed WLOE originally-- or sort of. WLOE lost its
license in late 1933, and the same two guys under a different name (!) put
WMEX on the air a year later. But never did WLOE do Classical. It was a
typical 1920s and 30s station, with everything from a live band (The Hotel
Bellevue Orchestra) to church services to the hits of the day to a story
lady (well, a story man-- one of the owners read the stories for the
kiddies) to some advertising talks. Classical was an occasional show, I am
sure, but not very often. WMEX originally did some ethnic programming
(Italian and Jewish mainly) as well as the same types of things that its
predecessor WLOE had been doing... I didn't listen to WMEX in the 1950s
before the Richmond Brothers bought it and switched it to top-40 in 1958,
so maybe in the 50s it was playing some classical music????
