And earlier was on WBOS-FM Saturdays from 10pm to midnight, according to
an undated but clearly pre-1976 newspaper clipping I have. Billy Bowen
is mentioned as co-host.
Whereas one subscriber to this list has let me know he remembers me
hosting a show with the same name and a lot of 78s earlier this decade,
I wish to state on the record here that I did NOT steal the name from
Sam Poulten. I have never heard his show (although I would like to). I
think I stole the name from WBCN...in the early '70s when their
announcers had wide latitude over what they put on the air (and the Big
Mattress featured a classical piece at 6 every morning), a tape of the
first couple lines of the Beatles song from "Magical Mystery Tour"
("Let's all get up and dance to a tune that was a hit before your mother
was born...") was played before, say, "Rum and Coca-Cola" by the Andrews
Sisters was played in full. It's possible, though, that I stole the
name from Trivial Pursuit: in the R.P.M. edition, the category for
questions about pre-'50s pop was called "Your Mother Should Know."
