I think the rules regarding tower lighting are:
*If you have a 200'+ tower, OR are within X miles of an airport, ya need
'em.
*If you PAINT it with the standard FAA colors (red, white), you must
light it at night, and ONLY with red lights... alternating solid, and
flashers. I think they have to be spaced so many feet as well.
*If ya DON'T wanna paint it, (preferring that cold, hard, galvanized
steel look), then you must light it with white strobes 24 hours.
So.... you pick: Pay to paint every couple of years (the FAA requires
certain "luminance" criteria).... or, pay for the electricity on the
lights 24/7.
Living near a tower myself, I prefer the warm, soft, fuzzy glow of red
lights. Hey, I just LOVE 600 foot x-mas trees.
