I'm not sure what constitutes radio "freaq" stories (or what the Q format is)
- -- I considered myself more of a radio "geek" -- but I thought I was the only
one in the world (the only girl maybe?) who kept a list, (which I updated
neatly every so often) of each distant radio station I pulled in at night. I
didn't know I was "logging broadcast band DX" (whoo hoo) until much later.
My most exciting catch was the Netherland Antilles on 800 on my dad's car
radio, then subsequently on other radios at home. I thought it was wild that
I could pull in a dutch station (altho not exactly coming from the
Netherlands) Also, on Sunday nights at midnight, WUNR (Boston) on 1600 used
to go off the air and if I timed it just exactly right, I could hear a station
on 1610 (also the Netherland Antilles I think? called "The Caribbean Beacon"
give an ID. It took me forever to get the time and conditions exactly right.
Alas my shortwave is not working, my small home radios can barely pick up
anything (although my phone gets WXKS-AM quite nicely), and I spend all my
time on the internet now, so the thrill seems to be gone...
