Well, what goes around comes around again.  Way back in the early 50s and
right through the formative years of rock, various "race" songs (black
music) were played by pop stations to the point where they started selling,
although they never charted on the Hot 100.  If you read the trades from
those early rock years, you notice Gavin, Billboard, Cashbox, and Record
World (remember them) mention airplay and disc jockey picks, not just the
number of records sold-- I recall several trades had charts based on
airplay, in fact.  

As a music director, I never relied ONLY on chart position... And even at
WRKO and tight-listed Drake stations, certain Beatles album cuts were
played-- it wasn't only hit singles...
