Here's how the AP might have made such a gaffe as the "death" of Bob Hope:
(1) They might have VDT terminals on which they could retrive items,
including those not yet sent out.
(2) An editor was probably revising biographical information on Hope (e.g.
his 95th birthday and being Grand Marshall of a recent parade in his home-
town of Toluca Lake, California).
(3) This biographical information probably began as "The late....", or
had that phrase somewhere in the message.
(4) The editor should have hit a "Store" button to have the revised item
go back into the computer. He must instead have pressed a "Send" button
to send it out on the AP website, hence, thew confusion.
I wonder if anyone on this newsgroup recalls any other major wire-service
gaffe or any TV news majuor gaffe (apart from April's Fools things like
Channel 7's 1980 "April Fool's" report of Blue Hill erupting as a volcano)
