Agreed.... there have been many over-excesses with translators being
used for rebroadcasting "non-profit" religious FM stations, via satellite.
That was NOT the idea that the translator service was designed for. But
somebody used some "loop-hole" to allow these "non-profit" organizations
to practically throw darts to any and every frequency not currently "in-use"
in any given location. These "non-profit" organizations don't pay "spectrum
fees", yet they own some of their stations with commerical licenses.
I own and operate an FM translator, myself. I pay my fees, annually. I
operate it totally as a public service for the enjoyment of the audience.
I have never solicited donations for upkeep of the facility and never will.
Why ? Because I enjoy what I do and that's it. If the Commission were to
legalize LPFM and allow privately owned translators to convert to local
programming, I would take the opportunity to just that. Even if it were
to be a few hours of local programming, it would a step in the right
direction.
Many translator operators have been given a bad rap for being associated
with the excesses in the translator industry. I just wanted to set the
record straight. I have been the owner and operator of my 1 watt station
for over ten years now. I am proud of it and run it for the sheer enjoyment
of doing it.
