Joe McCarthy's hearings had nothing to do with the blacklist. They had to
do with allegations that he had used his position to seek special
treatment for an aide who had been drafted into the army. That's why
they're called the "Army-McCarthy Hearings." Although it wasn't clear at
the time, historical documents now suggest that the army, with
encouragement from President Eisenhower, deliberately used the incident,
and the hearings, to discredit McCarthy. And it worked.
In fact, it's rather interesting to note that, when McCarthy got wind of
the meetings that were being held at the White House to discuss strategy
and to prepare the Secretary of the Army for his part in the hearings, he
sought to subpoena information on what went on at the meetings. And
President Eisenhower successfully resisted the subpoenas by claiming
Executive Privilege.
