Boy. WHEB had a very distinct sound. I remember that slogan "If you
want to know what the weather's going to do....." and the very MOR approach
'HEB had in the late sixties and very early seventies. WPFM (100.3) was
just a continuation of the 'HEB programming after 750 went to sleep at
Atlanta sunset. However when WHEB switched to Top-40 in late 1971, the
FM switched to WHEB-FM and even was mentioned more times than the AM
was, on the air. In '72 you always heard "F-M One-hundred ....H-E-B !!!".
and very rarely heard the AM being cross promoted. It was a super well
done station at the time. They even had Casey Kasem doing promos, left
and right. (Probably since they were one of AT-40's best affiliates).
The major problem for HEB-FM was the signal. 5,000 watts horizontal
in mono in the foothills of the White Mountains doesn't cut it. They
went stereo in the fall of 1974 and got the same jingle package as
WLS. "STEREO H-E-B !!!!". When 1978 came about, they joined the ranks
as a full powered station with 31,000 watts H/V. Since 1972 the AM
was an afterthought. In 1991, that afterthought was put to sleep for
good as they turned in the license at 4:00 p.m. on the day they killed it.
