He was very talented and will be missed very much from our little group. He knew nuances of local terrain that could help or hurt signals. The Lexington 1150/1470 site near his house had hills and poor ground conductivity going most directions but a nice slot southeast (roughly parallel to and just west of Mill St., Belmont) over meadows and wetlands that assisted the directional array in packing big signals into Watertown, Brighton, and the eastern edges of Newton and Waltham. When 1510 was operating out of Waverley Oaks Road (Rte. 60) in Waltham, it too was in a site compromised get-out-ability wise in most directions. It did enjoy an alley of low damp soil along Beaver Brook and the railroad tracks heading east and then Fresh Pond was next. Fortunately this was where the main beam from the DA was headed. The signal screamed right down the Charles River basin so at least the northern end of Boston along with other towns along the Charles and Mystic got a great signal. Go north or south much and things dropped off in a hurry (and, obviously, west of the towers was the dead zone). Dan found these technical discussions interesting. I sent him links to mp3 files of Boston stations being heard far afield by myself and other ham/DX hobbyists: 1510 heard from South Africa, UK, Sweden; 1030 from Iceland, Midway Island, Australia; 850 from Ireland and UK etc. Dan commented on the crazy distances salt water and a benevolent ionosphere could produce even as some stations could barely get out of their backyards. We'll miss Dan, that's for sure. Dan Strassberg died in 2018. He was 83. I just found a tribute article about him on the EDN Website. It's the continuing online version of what used to be Electrical Design News magazine, which is in Cambridge. Dan was a senior editor there. Read it at: https://www.edn.com/memories-of-dan-strassberg/?? I did not find a regular death notice online ? I only met Dan once in person, although we enjoyed a one-to-one email correspondence for a long time in addition to posting back-and-forth posts here. I met him for lunch in Scituate, my hometown, about 10 or 15 years ago. A good person to get to know, even a little, and a nice afternoon. We took a tour of the former transmitter site of the commercial shortwave station whose last calls when it was in Scituate were WNYW (New York Worldwide). It was moved to Florida in 1973. ? ? As others have noted, Dan was brilliant about many aspects of radio. I remember feeling well complemented by him once. When 850 kHz in Boston was still WHDH, I wrote a note to Dan one day in which I mentioned that when they changed to the night pattern it sounded like more power was being aimed at Scituate than in the daytime. He quickly wrote back that I had a really good ear because it was true, but only slightly. And I got the idea that he didn't have to look it up. He must have just had the WHDH patterns imprinted on his brain. RIP, Dan Strassberg. ? ? ?? On ?Thursday?, ?February? ?13?, ?2020? ?05?:?31?:?05? ?PM? ?EST, Sean Smyth wrote: This saddens me. The latest to go was Bill Campbell, who started Magic 106.7 back in 1981 and was general manager of WCRB from 1998 to 2006. He was the best boss I've ever had, and quite a character. I remember one day having lunch with him and Mo Polayes (then the owner of WJZS 99.3) on Block Island. When Bill excused himself and disappeared, we assumed he had gone to the rest room, but a few minutes later I was looking over Mo's shoulder and there was Bill swimming around in the harbor. Bill was quite a character. He's the only GM I've ever heard of who made it a habit to visit his transmitter sites. He actually persuaded Art Bump's people to hoist him up to the top of the Block Island radio tower while they were there istalling the antenna. Mo and Art are also gone. Whenever I had to go to Symphony Hall to work on the broadcast booth equipment, I always tiptoed past the stage door lest I disturb anyone who might be rehearsing; but when I went there with Bill one day, he sauntered right out onto the stage and proclaimed in a loud voice, "Hi everybody! I'm here!", which got him a dirty look from the only person in the hall, an electrician working on a chandelier. The last time I saw him was at former WCRB traffic manager Karen Kozimor's funeral; the time before that was Dave MacNeill's funeral. There have been altogether too many funerals.
