Billboard does have chart archives online, but they are a little pricey,
like $1+ per chart, plus the membership fee, so you may be better with a
Whitburn book.  And the online database only goes back a couple decades so
far, so that may not help much, depending on the song.

Of course, without knowing any words/title/artist, the charts may not help
anyway.  Maybe you should record yourself humming a couple bars and post
it somewhere for the bri think tank?

Whitburn has a book of Billboard's AC chart rankings.  I doubt the info is
available on line though.
