How about this notion:  Jews were so-hated in (I beklieve) the 16th
centuiry, that in Europe at least, they were forbidden to use currency; in
fact, merchants didn't even want their business. So they (my theory) may
have been forced to use precious gems to trade for various things...this the
term "Jew-elry".

It would happen that later on, many Jewish people would become some of the
world's finest and largest jewelers.
